Who PHP Is For

Partial Hospitalization is recommended when standard outpatient treatment is not enough — but inpatient hospitalization is not required. PHP at Invicta is a strong clinical fit for adults who:

Stepping Down from a Higher Level of Care

PHP is the standard next step after inpatient or residential treatment, providing continued structure and clinical support while reintegrating into daily life. Our levels of care overview outlines how PHP fits into the full continuum.

Managing a Co-Occurring Mental Health Condition

Individuals with a concurrent diagnosis — depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder — alongside a substance use disorder benefit most from PHP’s integrated dual diagnosis approach and daily psychiatric access.

Needing More Than Standard Outpatient Can Provide

If prior outpatient attempts have not led to lasting stability, PHP’s intensity and frequency of clinical contact provides the level of support that can make the difference.

Requiring Daily Structure During Early Recovery

PHP offers a structured daily framework — morning through late afternoon — that reduces exposure to triggers and builds the habits and coping skills that sustain recovery.

If you’re unsure whether PHP is the right starting point, our admissions team will conduct a no-cost clinical assessment and recommend the appropriate level of care. Call us at (626) 238-1511 or contact us online.

Integrated Dual Diagnosis Support

Co-occurring mental health conditions are present in the majority of individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorder — and PHP is the level of care most equipped to address both simultaneously.

At Invicta, dual diagnosis treatment is not a parallel track. Mental health and addiction care are integrated into the same clinical structure: your therapist, psychiatrist, and case manager coordinate together from day one. This approach is critical for conditions like PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety, which can directly sustain or worsen substance use if not treated alongside addiction.

PHP’s daily psychiatric access and clinical intensity make it the most appropriate setting for clients whose co-occurring conditions require consistent monitoring and adjustment throughout treatment.

Therapies and Approaches Used in PHP

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps clients identify and reframe the thought patterns driving addictive behavior and emotional distress.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT builds skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness — particularly effective for dual diagnosis clients and those with trauma histories.

Trauma-Focused Therapy (TFT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Evidence-based trauma modalities used within PHP for clients with PTSD or histories of complex trauma. See our full therapies overview for more on how these modalities are applied.

Motivational Therapy

Supports intrinsic motivation for change and helps clients clarify their values and goals in recovery.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

FDA-approved medications combined with counseling for opioid and alcohol use disorder, integrated into the broader PHP treatment plan when clinically indicated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours per day is PHP? PHP at Invicta runs approximately 6–8 hours per day, Monday through Friday (9am–6pm). The exact schedule varies by individual treatment plan, but most clients participate in structured programming throughout the majority of the day.

Is PHP the same as inpatient or residential treatment? No. PHP is an outpatient level of care — clients return home or to a sober living environment each evening. Invicta is an outpatient-only provider and does not offer residential or inpatient services.

Does insurance cover PHP? Most major commercial plans, Medi-Cal, and TRICARE cover PHP when it is clinically indicated and pre-authorized. Our admissions team verifies your benefits and manages the authorization process at no cost before your first day.

Can I work while in PHP? PHP’s daily time commitment typically isn’t compatible with full-time work. Part-time arrangements may be possible depending on your schedule and clinical needs — your case manager can help you think through logistics during the admissions process.

How long does PHP last? Duration varies based on clinical need and progress. Most clients participate in PHP for two to four weeks before stepping down to IOP. Review our levels of care page to understand the full continuum. Your treatment team reviews progress weekly and adjusts the timeline accordingly.

What is the difference between PHP and IOP? PHP involves more hours per day, more frequent psychiatric access, and a higher level of clinical structure than IOP. IOP is typically the next step after PHP stabilizes the client. The right starting point depends on your clinical assessment — call (626) 238-1511 and our team will help you determine the right fit.

What happens after PHP? Most clients step down from PHP to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which continues structured treatment with a reduced daily time commitment. Discharge planning begins on day one — your case manager builds your step-down plan from the start of PHP. Learn more on our levels of care page.
